How to get around

Four cities in the United Kingdom-London, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Newcastle-have an urban underground system, where daily or longer tickets can be bought for unlimited travel between certain stations. The London Underground (Tube) runs from very early in the morning to about midnight depending on the line. The Tube runs to all parts of London and is the easiest and quickest way to get about the city for the tourist.

The famed double-decker buses still operate in many British cities and tickets are purchased from the bus driver or conductor. Enquire about discount day tickets as most cities have them. Night buses are also a feature of many cities. Medium-sized 'hopper' buses are a feature in smaller cities.

Britain's roads are safe compared to the European and world stage, are very well signposted, and are not as heavily tolled as their European counterparts. Drivers drive on the left and you should always give way to your right on roundabouts.

Motorways are marked with an "M" and have two or three lanes and a speed limit of 70mph (112kph); dual-carriageways "A" roads are similar to motorways but have more junctions and have roundabouts etc; single-carriageway "A" roads tend to be busier and traffic moves more slowly, speed limit 50-60mph (80-96kph); and "B" roads are slower, country roads. The speed limits in built up areas is usually 30mph (48kph) unless otherwise stated.

All foreign nationals may drive in the United Kingdom with their national licences for up to one year. Be careful when driving through the countryside on "B" roads as on-coming traffic isn't always evident. The limit of alcohol in the blood while driving is 0.80 mg/ml. The two main motoring organisations in Britain are the AA and the RAC; check to see if there is a reciprocal agreement with your own organisation. The police, fire brigade, and ambulances are all on 999, or the alternative pan-European emergency number for all services is 112.
